Our homeworld is dying.

The seas have dried,
the land has grown arid,
and even the air is grows thin.

The last best hope of our people lies beyond the gravity well.

Solarcrawl is a system neutral roleplaying campaign of exploration, bravery, danger and hope in a vast and fantastic solar system.

Take on dual roles: as the astronauts journeying forth to the other worlds within their solar system, and as the heads of the space agency that builds their rockets, chooses their destinations, and hopefully,  work together in hopes of rekindling their fading world.

Compatible Systems

  • The Black Hack by David Black
  • Into the Odd by Chris MacDowall
  • Mörk Borg by Pelle Nilsson and Johann Nohr
  • Knave by Ben Milton
  • Solo Borg by Patrick Buechner (for solo adventurers)

Solarcrawl was born from a love of old school dungeon games, all the way from B/X to the current editions of The Dragon Game, along with the many wild and interesting variants that have popped up over the years, including Into the Odd, Cairn, Knave, Down we Go, MÖRK BORG, Mausritter, Ultraviolet Grasslands/SEACAT, The Electrum Archive, and who knows how many more.

As a result, the rules of this book were kept simple, stripped down to a narrow stat block for NPCs and simple structures for the Homeworld and spacecraft, in order for you to be able to bolt this book onto most any system that features hit points, saves and levels.

Each session rotates around two phases:

Mission Phase

In the Mission Phase, players take the roles among a crew of Astronauts exploring an alien world. Every entry in this book is designed to be compatible with or easily translated to a wide variety of OSR games, making it easy on the players.

The characters land their spacecraft, explore the planet's surface, and make bold discoveries while avoiding each planet's unique hazards.

The book contains a variety of planetary maps to be explored, with each one a mix of hexes and points to be searched for wonders and discoveries, all the while the crew must balance their safety, and the dwindling resources of their landing craft.

Once the expedition is complete, the crew lifts off, back to the Homeworld.

Homeworld Phase

Upon safely touching down, the crew begins the Homeworld Phase. They celebrate their successes and mourn their dead, they research any discoveries they've brought back, and develop better spacecraft.

Some of this research can be dedicated to regreening their world, which will in turn allow them to keep pushing forward, deeper into the far orbits.

Will your crew save their people? Or will their bodies lie lost on some faraway world?

We play to find out.

Praise for Solarcrawl

"Solarcrawl is absolutely dripping with flavor in both its writing and art. It is exactly what you need if you want to go get lost amongst the stars, dropping down planetside, and allowing yourself to be surprised by what you find. And, of course, Galen's incredible art brings those worlds to life throughout the whole book. I can't wait to take my first trip to the final frontier with this game."

Spencer Campbell, creator of Slayers, RUNE, NOVA and LOOT.

"Solarcrawl is the space exploration game I wanted when I pre-ordered No Man's Sky. It was what I wanted to be when I grew up; when I said I wanted to be an astronaut this is what I meant. It's hopeful, weird, and hands down the best exploration-focused experience I've had in a decade."

Shawn Drake, co-creator of Court of Blades, Fe Borg, and Hedge.
